The Process

The creation of a figure begins with a pickax,
breaking the clay out of the ground.

Not an easy task,
especially in the heat of the summer.

Mixiing

In the traditional method, the clay is prepared
by mixing, soaking, wetting, and sifting.  A process
that takes several days.

It is then either coiled or pinched into the desired shape.

The features then emerge by carving.

"When I start, I have an idea of what I want it to do,
but a lot of times, the clay goes where it wants to."

Painting

Slips, the natural pigments that are also gotten
from the ground, are applied to the figure.

Kathleen’s work is known for its whimsical faces
and brightly colored features.
